Auchinleck Munro Maniacs

For the uninitiated a Munro is a Scottish mountain over 3,000ft, and the Auchinleck Munro Maniacs are a group of venturers who find snow and blizzards part of the fun of hill walking.

Like so many other good things, the Munro Maniacs, an eager group of hill walkers, started as a family and friends affair, inspired by Jimmy MacGregor’s West Highland Way adventures on television some years ago. The Group walked the Way in 1984 for Cancer Research in memory of George Bain, who was well known in the village.

They have been going uphill ever since, along with sons, daughters and many friends.

The main core of the group have now completed all the Munros south of Fort William and are now planning to tackle the vast wilderness area of the West of Scotland, Knoydart, Torridon, Dundonald and the Fisherfield ranges. The group will be based at a small crofting area on the West coast, between Ullapool and Gairloch, to tackle the most remote of these difficult mountains.

We are looking forward to many good days walking and taking in the breathtaking scenery that Scotland has to offer. You don’t need to go abroad, everything is on your own doorstep, so come and join us and see what your country has to offer – a sight to behold.

If you would like to know more about the Munro Maniacs contact or call in to the Community Centre and talk to Danny Gemmell, an enthusiastic member of the group.
