Auchinleck Outdoor Bowling Club

Auchinleck Outdoor Bowling Club was opened on 17th May 1902.
The ceremony must have been spectacular. In your mind’s eye you can picture it. The Brass Band playing in the bright sunshine, and a list of dignitaries as long as your arm. Many aspiring bowlers came from the surrounding villages.
The opening speech was given by the first president, Mr William Wilson. He gave everyone an insight on how the dream came to fruition. He recalled how, 12 years before, a public meeting was called and although 60 gentlemen attended, the plan fell by the wayside.

However, near the end of 1900, another public meeting was called. This time the 60 gentlemen who attended agreed to become members. (There was no funding in those days). This started the ball rolling, or bowl in this case.
The same as today, various sites had to be considered before agreement was reached by all parties.

After Mr Wilson had spoken, Mr Hill, the local minister, was asked to say a few words. He presented Mrs Wilson (the President’s wife) with a memento from Danial Leslie. It was Mr Leslie who as responsible for the fine condition of the green. The gift was a silver jack held high in the hands of a Grecian dancing girl.
Mrs Wilson then threw the first jack and declared the green open.

The contractors were names still familiar in the village, George Reid of Catrine and John Dalziel from Auchinleck.

This was the start of a new way of life in Auchinleck, and many champion bowlers have served their apprenticeship on the turf here.

A junior structure was incorporated into the structure in 1976. This venture has been equally successful and many future champions have Auchinleck Bowling Club for their success.
